My youngest and I were standing in line at Michael’s craft store, waiting behind a single customer. We were there to order balloons for my pregnant daughter’s gender reveal party.

We stood happily waiting, planning the rest of our day… order a cake, pick up more decorations and decide who would photograph and video the reveal.

The woman ahead of us at the register seemed to be taking a bit longer than normal to check out, but we still weren’t standing there an excessive amount of time.

A few minutes later, we heard a loud, theatrical huff behind us.

Turning toward the irritated voice, a forty-something woman dressed in denim shorts and a black tee shirt glared at us, followed by narrowing her eyes at the checkout. There was no one behind her and a line of empty self-checkout stations to our left.

She wasn’t trapped. In fact, there was no one preventing her from checking out.

We faced front, returning to our joyful conversation about all-things-baby.

Then, bang!

The woman who was behind us body slammed a solid piece of decorative wood and a few other items onto the counter next to where we stood.

Both of us jumped, our heads whipping toward the sound, watching the woman stomp away from the counter. The force was so severe, she announced her displeasure to half the store. I’m convinced shoppers several aisles away looked up to see what happened.

My daughter and I exchanged a wide-eyed look thinking, did she really just do that?

As the woman marched toward the exit, we leaned forward, squinting to be sure of what we were reading on her back.

“POWERED BY RAGE” was printed in giant lettering across the back of her tee shirt.

True story.

Daughter and I turned toward each other again, bursting into laughter. Half because we were coming down from the scare of 30 seconds earlier, half from the unmissed irony.

Later on, I considered how ridiculous the woman behaved. The impatience, number of empty self-serve registers, her outrageous response.

Events that were mere annoyances in past decades, managed by something called self-control, now erupt into public displays of anger. Mess with the wrong person and a confrontation ensues.

Depending on what transpires between rising from bed and waiting in a short line at a store hours later, I get it that sometimes you can handle no more.

But pounding your stuff down like a toddler? As a grown woman? Wearing those words?

The angry woman’s shirt might have been the name of a band. Perhaps some cultural reference I’m unaware of. Most likely, it was a personal anthem that I understood perfectly.

Rebellion. Defiance. Non-conformity.

I’m going out on a limb here, but when you dress yourself in the word RAGE, I’m thinking you firmly set your private agenda for the entire day ahead.

I have two ball caps. One says Unstoppable and the other says Goal Getter. I read them before I put one on for my morning walks and I believe they help to set my determination pre walk, so yes – your assumption may be right about the rage t-shirt. Unfortunately, Elena, there are just some people in life who are angry about everything.

So true about those who choose anger just because. Your hats are printed with great inspiration!

Right? Astonishing that someone would desire to live by such a harmful motto.

This scene, or a similar one, happens all too frequently these days. Just where are they in such a hurry to be?????

Even when I’m annoyed by a delay in a check out line, I control myself. Sad that some people can’t do the same.

I know a couple of people that shirt would suit perfectly. I tend to avoid them.

I’ve been overthinking people like this recently. I’ve come to the conclusion that the people most likely to use the word privileged to describe someone else are probably the people who most act as if they are

Perhaps she felt privileged and thus acted as though no one else belonged in the store/space she occupied? Either way, she was most assuredly quite comfortable upsetting everyone in her path.

When I was younger, being engaged with other people, in person, every single day seemed very important. In present modern society, being in your cocoon isn’t a bad thing.

Some people just don’t do patience very well. Others, are just ignorant and immature…

I’m thankful God calls us to respond with patience and grace, even when others choose a different path.

Yes, we require “extra” patience and grace to endure…😉

Self-control appears to be a thing of the past in way too many people. I am always appalled when people act like the woman you encountered. But then again, I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised because how many adhere to cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit?

Like you, I should not be surprised but I continue to be appalled when I encounter people like this. Maybe because we start fresh each day thinking about fruits of the Spirit, wrongly assuming others might be doing the same!

When I saw your post title “Powered by Rage,” I was surprised because, frankly, that just doesn’t sound like you. And, of course, it wasn’t your motto! What a story! “Equipsblog” is right that some things you just can’t make up. I’m still shaking my head. If it weren’t for the t-shirt, a personal statement about herself, I would assume the person had had a very bad day and this was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I’ll end your tale with…”Then the woman ran out to her car, threw herself inside, and was racked with sobs and regrets.” Actually, though, that is certainly fiction. I can imagine her tires squealing as she peeled out of the parking lot. I hope she didn’t hurt anyone on her way to where ever she was headed. What she needed was, as kids used to say, to “take a chill pill.”

All well-said, Linda. The shirt, her actions… all would lead me to agree with the squealing tires. Imagine if the woman was confronted with a real problem or difficult situation she had to navigate…

Well, I guess she at least was self-aware! But dang, how weird to get so upset that she had to wait to have someone check her out….. People are so angry these days. I think part of it is the political arena, the lack of choice as AI takes over our lives, and the loss of community as downtowns, stores, churches, etc., slowly disappear as we live more and more of our lives online. But whatever the reason, it doesn’t bode well for the future.

Anger and outrage are all too common. In her case (and others), the fury appears planned in advance-a way of life. Must be exhausting. I agree with your insight regarding the erosion of community and how it is affecting society.

Nothing ever good comes from rage, but that woman certainly was wearing the right t-shirt for her persona.
Anyway it’s this era plague : rage and lack of manners.
I notice it especially when back to italy over summer holidays and I go to the supermarket. Everybody there is on holidays and there is no reason whatsoever for all that rush followed by anger when someone is a bit slow to pay or pack their shopping.
Anyway back to most important and pleasant thing, how did the party go?
