Last month (October), I celebrated my 58th birthday. Like most in their 50’s, I wonder how that number is my age. Those digits are other people – the ones I previously referred to as “older”.
Perhaps the climbing number is what made me extra thoughtful and a bit edgy this past birthday. Sort of a cake filled with deep sentiment, frosted with a bit of cynicism. I felt like this year was more a 50th or 60th milestone.
My mind flooded with a bunch of things I miss…here are 15:
I miss….
- Gift boxes at department store checkout counters
- Life without 24/7 glasses/contacts – I officially can’t squint my way through anything
- A tighter neck, thicker hair
- When sports newscasters just relayed sports. With enthusiasm. Without inserting political opinion.
- When special things (like vacationing, a spa day or going for a fancy dinner) were appreciated as special – not expected
- Living seconds, minutes, hours without social media
- Hardcopies
- When the mall was a happy place – especially this time of year
- When watching a movie/TV was special family time – now nightly options stream on 2700 apps
- When water cooler conversations focused more on what’s being lived, rather than watched
- Eight, nine, ten year olds…when their appearance and behavior reflected childhood
- Seeing people’s eyes more than the tops of their heads
- Eating supermarket fruit and vegetables without forever chemicals in pesticides
- When the world didn’t encourage noise, busyness; nor reward the sardonic, snarky
- Drinking a 9pm tall glass of water without the 3am wake up call…
Thank you for reading! Have a terrific Monday!
