15 Misses on my 58th

Published by

on

Last month (October), I celebrated my 58th birthday. Like most in their 50’s, I wonder how that number is my age. Those digits are other people – the ones I previously referred to as “older”.

Perhaps the climbing number is what made me extra thoughtful and a bit edgy this past birthday. Sort of a cake filled with deep sentiment, frosted with a bit of cynicism. I felt like this year was more a 50th or 60th milestone.

My mind flooded with a bunch of things I miss…here are 15:

I miss….

  1. Gift boxes at department store checkout counters
  2. Life without 24/7 glasses/contacts – I officially can’t squint my way through anything
  3. A tighter neck, thicker hair
  4. When sports newscasters just relayed sports. With enthusiasm. Without inserting political opinion.
  5. When special things (like vacationing, a spa day or going for a fancy dinner) were appreciated as special – not expected
  6. Living seconds, minutes, hours without social media
  7. Hardcopies
  8. When the mall was a happy place – especially this time of year
  9. When watching a movie/TV was special family time – now nightly options stream on 2700 apps
  10. When water cooler conversations focused more on what’s being lived, rather than watched
  11. Eight, nine, ten year olds…when their appearance and behavior reflected childhood
  12. Seeing people’s eyes more than the tops of their heads
  13. Eating supermarket fruit and vegetables without forever chemicals in pesticides
  14. When the world didn’t encourage noise, busyness; nor reward the sardonic, snarky
  15. Drinking a 9pm tall glass of water without the 3am wake up call…

Thank you for reading! Have a terrific Monday!

I think numbers 6 and 13 are very relatable to many. Happy birthday, Mama. Stay healthy. Thank God, WP is only my SM.

Good to know a couple were relatable and thank you for the kind wishes. There are some extraordinary writers on WP, making it highly unique from social media platforms.

We share a birthday month, although I have a bit more than twenty years on you; I just turned seventy-nine. I tried to think of things I miss, and apart from my parents and my beloved cat, I couldn’t think of many. I would have agreed about the eyesight issues, but I got rid of my cataracts and got new lenses implanted, so that took care of that. Other than the blogs, I’m not on social media at all, which makes life more pleasant, and when my friends and I gather, we still talk, pulling out the phones only occasionally. And I demand hard copies of important documents: no electronic signatures for me.

In short, I’m not a Luddite, but I’m doing the best I can to live in a world that suited me better than the one that surrounds us today! On we go — let’s enjoy it!

Happy (belated) October birthday! Hanging onto what suits you is the way to go! Missing your parents touched my heart🥹. For all of our house documents, electronic signatures were required. I love that your friends rarely pull out phones when visiting. That’s the way time together should be💗.

I miss the old days often. It was less complicated and I was more naive.

“Less-complicated” – so true. All the technology and amenities at our fingertips for “ease” and somehow it feels more cluttered than simplistic.

Really like your list–I can relate to that. I have a few years on you, and still count myself on the younger side of old rather than what they call the superagers. Still debating how badly I want to join that crew, not that I have a whole lot of say in the matter.

Keep counting yourself on the younger side and the mental game is won. Yep, no say in the matter but thank God we’re here to keep going💗.

I have more than a decade on you but yep, some of those would be on my list of missed things as well. But like my friend, shoreacres, I need hard copies too.

Right? Even though print outs are hard to
come by, I try to continue journaling and enjoy good pens, stationary and great sheets of paper. Hand-written words have become near-obsolete.

You can probably hear my “Amen” to all those things. We certainly used to live in a simpler time. I don’t want to be Amish, but I do think they get a lot of things “right.”

A great comparison and explanation. I agree with you Linda. So much is good about modern living but we really need to be intentional or days could be absorbed by meaninglessness (that is normal for many).

Excellent and accurate list! I celebrated my 72nd in October so I can definitely relate to many of these and add a few more, of course. There’s also another list though – the one that includes all of the perks of being over 70 😉

I identify with all of those. The NorthPark Mall in Dallas was magical at Christmas, and yes, the gifts were wrapped at the counter. I’m a bit older than you, way past mid-life, more like end of life, but I experienced all of those reflections. At 58, you are a young-un.

    1. Mid-Life Mama Avatar

Well, now I feel encouraged thinking I’m a youngin! “Magical” is such a good word to describe how the malls were years ago at Christmastime. How things have changed. The older we get, the more perspective – and I believe appreciation – we have for what’s truly good (and absurd!) in this world.
