Summer Quote-Rest

Published by

Rest is not idleness,
and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day,
listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the blue sky,
is by no means a waste of time.
John Lubbock, The Use of Life

This past week has been a busy one (thus missing my usual Monday post). When I read this poem yesterday, I was inspired to slow down, lay under a sprawling tree and look up at floating clouds – like Sir John Lubbock references in his poem. But when I arrived, the clouds weren’t “floating” and the sky was turning ominous.

The clouds didn’t matter…it still felt like a very ‘summery’ thing to do. I can’t recall the last time I laid on a blanket on the grass, (maybe with the kids when they were younger?). Admittedly, it felt awkward at first, but once I relaxed, that 30-minute stop in my day became a highlight.

I appreciate your visit today and hope you had a good week. I wish you a peaceful, restful summer weekend!

A great truth! And one shouldn’t feel bad about it. We need to be refreshed. My son always says to me to rest! Thanks for this reminder 🙂

Last night my husband came in from the yard just as I was heading out to tell him the same thing. “Look at those amazing clouds backlit so they look pink.” Never the same clouds twice are there.

I don’t know if I could just gaze for that long. I would enjoy my surroundings and then open my book. I do enjoy special settings for reading–in front of the fireplace, in a cozy room with snow falling outside, sitting on my deck with the forest in front of me and birds singing.

I agree. A half hour felt like forever. But once I settled in, I enjoyed the sky views. A book is always a welcome addition with a beautiful setting. Loved your image of a cozy room and snowy view.

I don’t lay in the grass but the glider on the deck lets me comfortably watch the clouds as I slowly rock… A wonderful way to meditate… I am planning to have a restful Sunday…

Yes – it is difficult to “do nothing”. Of course, reading is not doing nothing in my book and that also goes for writing and reading posts!
I have a lovely side covered porch where I can sit and read or nap.
