Is WordPress Social Media?

One-minute read.

According to WordPress (and virtually all other tech sites), the platform is a website builder, not a social media site. WordPress is the location where you “connect social media” to your blog or website. The majority of sources point to a clear distinction between social media and WordPress.

I’m thinking it too: WordPress users like, comment and sell stuff comparable to Instagram. But, that is where the similarities end. The foundation of the platform is a content management system (CMS), making WordPress merely the host for writing, blogging and integrating with outside social media accounts, not being a social media site itself.

While WP has its own ongoing issues, I appreciate word-focused blogs. Writers who blend words together that cause us to think or elicit emotion or make us laugh are admirable. Rhyming poems, captivating short stories, thoughtful book reviews, historical posts…there is good stuff here.

The photography on WordPress is also quite remarkable. A picture really can convey 1000 words. The words, images and even occasional videos still keep WordPress slightly unique from mainstream socials.

As we settle into this new year, many WP bloggers have mentioned what they hope to write about throughout 2025. Travel shares are always enjoyable, but so are the day-to-day happenings. Most of us take what’s presently catching our attention, filling our hearts or annoying us, and sharing it with readers. We sort out some of our own stuff while reading through each other’s writings. We are reminded that we are not alone. For me, that is meaningful time spent together.

Thank you for reading.

Thank you, Pat. WP always seemed like a unique experience compared to any other platform. But, it’s good to know the technical term supports that.

One of the things I like most about reading people’s blogs is the quality of the writing. Almost every person I follow has an above average skill. They soon become firm friends. I think of social media as being quite flighty, lacking content and meaning.

I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. WP includes “words”, paragraphs, full sentences, usually punctuation…☺️. Solid writing is becoming increasingly rare. I’ll remember a post, but couldn’t recall what I scrolled on Instagram.

I asked this question a few years ago. I don’t consider it social media, but most of my readers did …

There is the option to scroll, but in my WP experience, most people are actually reading-investing real time and thought which I don’t observe on traditional socials. Very interesting how readers responded to your question-thank you for sharing that.

WordPress might not be traditional social media, but it sure feels like a community! The connection through words, ideas, and creativity here is unmatched. To me, it’s like social media for the soul. Thanks for raising this question—it made me reflect!

Agreed. It is not social media. The goal even is not to be social but to share ideas and express thoughts.

Yes, the WP experience does feel unique in both ways you mention-sharing ideas and expressing thoughts.

I agree, WP isn’t social media but you can connect your site to social media. I do have mine connected to FB so my blog posts automatically are posted there without me having to do it manually. But I agree with some of the comments made here – WP is a community. My WP community is rather small – just those few folks whose posts I truly enjoy reading or viewing their beautiful photography. You obviously included.

I’m honored to be included! That sense of community is defintely one of the greatest distinctions from socials.

Thanks for the thoughtful post! I’m grateful to be able to use WordPress as an outreach ministry and for more whimsical topics. I thoroughly enjoy and am edified by the posts of the other WP bloggers I follow, such as yours. I republish my posts at Twitter/X, but I don’t linger there because it’s such a deluge.

I understand the value in sharing on social media, especially as you use it for ministry. You said it perfectly that it’s too often a deluge whereas WordPress has a different platform with much more “reading”. Thank you for your comment, Tom!

Great insight. WordPress truly stands apart with its focus on content creation, connecting through words and images rather than just social interaction. It’s a unique space for reflection and sharing, making it special for both writers and readers.

I don’t feel like social media is very social. In fact, it feels more like being at a party with loud music and everyone just mingling a little bit with everyone for a few seconds. Writing heavy sites like blogs and even threads feels a lot more social like the two people in the corner of the room at the party getting into a real conversation and talking and getting an idea of who the other person is on a much deeper level. It’s just two different types of people at the same party but different focuses. Not sure if that made any sense. Lol!

Yes, it made great sense! This was a very good analogy of being at a busy, loud, motion-filled party versus the slower, more peaceful, meaningful space on WordPress. Thank you so much for your contributions!

I sometimes feel social media is like the old high school cafeteria. Some good times, and then some people who bullied. I like blogging with WordPress and have made many blogging friends.

You make a fine comparison to the cafeteria and having made friends on WP is really special. Thank you for your thoughts!

The only social media I really use now is IG, as I like to look at lovely pictures of places in the world or homes( and digs of course but don’t we all?😜) and WordPress and because I like the way it connect us and I like the way with no polemic or aggression you can share opinions, read about other people experiences and existence and learn new things , sometimes with a good old fashion laugh.
So yes I rely to your post a lot!!!!
