I wasn’t much of a dog person until…🐾

Published by

We never had a dog while the kids were growing up, though a beloved mini lop bunny was part of the family for 12 years, along with a tortoise, hamster and guinea pig at various times throughout their youth. Our daughter and new son-in-law brought an Australian Shepherd home last year and we have honestly enjoyed watching Maverick become part of the family!

Not having a dog growing up and knowing nothing about puppyhood, my daughter had an adjustment period during Maverick’s training! My son-in-law grew up with dogs and handled the puppy months very well. It’s not easy training a puppy!

The work was worth it. One of the sweetest parts of watching him grow this past year is how close he is to my daughter. Maverick is by my daughter’s side whether cooking in the kitchen, sitting on the couch, or working in her office. He rarely leaves her side.

When wiping something off the floor one afternoon, she stood up under the countertop, wacking her head! Laying down to ice the top of her head, Mavie knew something was wrong and snuggled himself right by her head to comfort her!

Another night when she was sad missing home (she’s my one in Texas), Maverick knew something was wrong. She had snapped the following pic to me, showing how he buried his face in her blanket and stayed there by her feet!

Here he is on neighborhood watch duty😄
Getting taller…

I was always a no-dog kind of gal. But, Maverick has opened my eyes to the blessing that a dog can be to a family. Now, I’m attached!

Friends who decided not to get another dog after years of having them still miss them around the house. They truly become special. Thank you for your visit!🐾

You’re a dog nana! My daughter just got a cat — the first ever on my side of the family. We were all dog people but now we’re cat people too!! Who knew?

Thank you, Tom – he really is! No, I am most definitely not getting a dog!😂 I love Maverick and I can enjoy him whenever I want – when we’re there, he’s been to our house and on FaceTime!

Will you be getting another one? I’ve noticed it’s a hard decision for people whether or not to get the next one.
Thank you – he really is a sweetie.

I really want another one, but my wife and our boys don’t. Maybe once we get a bigger home, the feelings will change. But I do miss having a joyful pup at home.

He’s going to be a loyal companion for years to come. They are every smart and protective as he shown. Should you ever get a dog, I would suggest a dog like a poodle. Their smart, cool cucumber and very loyal. They also don’t get very big. My Granny carried Blcky around evrywhere like a security blanket. They are not as difficult to train because they are not super hyper dogs. They travel well, you never know when you decide to bring dog joy into your life. 🙂

That is what we hear, that Maverick will always be a loyal companion. It sounds like your granny had a super sweet dog. Those little ones I see in stores and in airports all the time. You’re right that dogs are very smart!

I’m not a dog person either having always had cats in the family. But our son has a loveable, adorable, and well-trained Brittany named Barley. And I have fallen in love with him. He’s 10 years old now, but he loves coming to our house (they live in another state) and loving on “Nana.”

Your son’s dog Barley sounds wonderful. It’s funny how we welcome new experiences through our adult children. I would have never imagined getting attached to a dog, yet here we are a year later!🐾

He is absolutely adorable. We got our first dog well before my first born arrived and she had to
fit in in the dog s routine😂then we got a second one and shortly daughter number two arrived and despite having two small kids and a still you g dog in the house when the first died the house felt incredibly empty and after a year we got a second dog and since then we stack with two dogs and thanks Lord I have them especially now that both my daughters are teenagers😆

My mother was not a dog person so I never had a dog growing up (she ran a cattery). As a Vet Nurse, I love all animals. When I married we got an Australian Shepherd (I picked the breed and my husband picked the dog). Anyway after I had my 1st child, my mother came to visit. She wasn’t thrilled with having a dog in the house until I sent her a note carried carefully in my dog’s mouth asking for something to drink. Our dog went straight to my mom and sat at her feet staring at her until she acknowledged her presence. Then she gently released the note. My mother adored that dog. Always said she was the smartest dog to ever live…. I do think Aussies are far and away smart dogs – second only to the Border Collie (and it is a very very close second)!

I’m going to share your sweet story with my youngest who has the Australian Shepard. My son in law chose the breed and my daughter would agree with you that he’s very smart. We have fun with him when we’re in Texas and “talk” with him on FaceTime😄. Thank you for sharing your experience about your Aussie!💙🐾
