Texas Tuesday – The Backstory

The Summary

In the last three years, I’ve been to Texas eight times. Last Spring, I stayed a month. My then-remote position made it possible. Though I have seen and stayed in several Texas cities and towns, the state is beyond enormous and I’ve barely scratched the hot soil. I’ll be posting on Tuesdays about my travels.

Why Texas?

Our youngest daughter is married to a Texan. They met at their university in the gorgeous state of Virginia. We knew he was from Texas. We didn’t know he was taking over a family company after graduation. She doesn’t want to start a family unless her family is right next door, so we’ve been contemplating a move 1500 miles south.

The Longer Backstory

When our kids were young and money was tight, we annually drove from NY to FL once a year to escape the endless gray sky and heavy February snow.

Our usual overnight stop was in Virginia and from the moment our weary bodies first meandered into the hotel, I loved that state. Over the years, we toured around D.C., Arlington, Alexandria and a few other locations. While those areas are the hub of so many important agencies, it wasn’t until I was out in Fredericksburg, some areas of Richmond, and eventually Charlottesville that I believed we should live in Virginia. I received a job offer at a university in VA ten years ago. I was so elated but we had to pull the plug when we discovered the sports our children played were a minimum hour drive away. It didn’t seem wise to transplant three teenagers to a place absent what they were great at and loved doing.

Virginia has lush foliage. It’s historic. Depending on where you reside, the ocean is likely only hours away. Four seasons but winter doesn’t live on forever like it does in my part of NYS. The Blue Ridge Highway is a favorite. We hiked. I haven’t researched why Virginia is for lovers but I love Virginia.

Four years ago, my husband and I were engaged in serious discussions about where we would relocate. Leaving had been on the table for years but was finally imminent. Our youngest was in her senior college year and our twins had graduated from their universities and were gainfully employed. One in town and the other in Florida.

My husband was pushing hard for Florida. It’s home to many friends and we have traveled the state extensively, becoming highly familiar with many areas. I’m an ocean person and sheller, but I was still firm on Virginia. Florida is vacation.

He made great points that VA still has higher taxes (not NY-high of course) and winter weather. I emphasized that the tropical humidity is stifling and dry heat is better if we must live in a hot climate.

Then, our discussions stalled when life hit…

2020

  • Covid shut down the world and our eldest daughter’s role became remote, moving her back to NY from Florida.
  • Half-way through 2020, Covid significantly affected my husband’s job – a transfer was no longer an option.

2021

  • Relo discussions were back on the table. We started working toward compromise by touring suburbs of Charlotte and Raleigh. Still close enough to drive to the ocean but warm enough to never see snow…
  • My urgency elevated, knowing the kids were seriously dating and I didn’t want anyone making a “home” anywhere but near where we landed!
  • It was confirmed our youngest daughter would be grounded in Texas during the 8-year takeover. Prior, there had been a sliver chance they wouldn’t be required to remain geographically close. Why would we relocate anywhere other than where we had family? Our twins had no idea where they wanted to settle down but they too wanted low taxes and nicer weather. Texas offers both.
  • Life is filled with ‘moves’ we never planned but God ordained.
  • Our daughter has been back home as many times as I’ve been there. The distance has not grown easier. She misses us deeply and we her. She couldn’t have imagined the culture shock in central Texas. This wasn’t Dallas, Austin or Ft. Worth which more resemble home with lots of trees, bodies of water and parks…

2022

  • My husband had cancer surgery. The man is a machine. A tank. Always outdoors and in motion. He refuses help and does everything himself. His nickname is Superman. But even he was susceptible to kryptonite and the diagnosis scared us STILL. Surgery was 100% successful and we thank God.
  • My husband received a job offer that you work for your whole career. Sure, we rejoiced. We also scratched our heads…really, now? What is God doing? Are we supposed to stay in New York?

2023

  • Our eldest who moved back home from Florida relocated to Dallas.
  • So, two out of three are in Texas. Start planning again…but his job…no way was he leaving the job at 60. He doesn’t go into an office, so keeping something small in NY while living in TX was possible.

2024

  • Our son-in-law worked out a way to commute to the business while moving them closer to city suburbs that feel more normal for our daughter, much more enticing for us, and to give them greater social opportunities.
  • Just when we readied to sell, our eldest daughter moved back to NY from Dallas, which I wrote about here and here, earlier this year.
  • In early May, the pastor talked one Sunday about making decisions. Not always knowing what it will all look like in the end, but to move forward in faith. Walking to the car, my husband who is the least likely person to discuss a sermon over where we’re going for breakfast summarized pastor’s words and then said, “I am confident we should sell the house this summer and get an apartment while we figure out our next move.”
  • The house selling in less than 24-hrs significantly over asking was confirmation that it was the right decision.

So, that is journey of how the Monday moving series began. It comes along with Texas Travels on Tuesdays for a few weeks, then periodically. Because my daughter lives there and we are seriously contemplating the “great state” becoming our new home, I want to know more. I’ll share photos and thoughts from the eight trips.

Thank you for reading my post today and have a blessed Tuesday!

Family is important, Cost of living is important. Lots of people are moving to TX. I still prefer living in VA for the reasons you mentioned in your post. Good luck in this momentous decision. Home prices in TX are going up because so many people are moving there, especially in the Austin area. I recommend San Antonio area or the Hill Country, but west Texas, not so much. One time when we were on I-10, we saw signs for a rest area for over 100 miles, I was expecting a restroom or at least a porta-potty. It had a picnic table without even a cactus to squat behind.

😂😅 I’m not surprised about your rest area experience! They say if you want to know what eternity feels like, drive-through Texas!
My daughter has seen a significant rise in housing costs in the last two years. It’s shocking how many people we’ve met since she moved down there who relocated from the northeast. Also, the tax break is drawing countless companies.
Thank you for the good luck wishes🤍.

I’m a born and raised Texan and think it’s the greatest state to live in. Huge positives are low taxes, it’s big with so many places across the state worth visiting, people are genrally nice and inviting and the state has many different climates and elevations to explore. The down side as a Texas is, the heat, obsivive heat so bad you can hardly breath unless indoors, through the roof electric bills, a broken electrical grid and the organization that controls it. No 4 seasons although their are glimpes of in different areas of the state. Flies! Don’t forget your repellant. Houses are affordable and your money will go along way and without state taxes you two will feel like you got a raise. The Texas government, Greg Abbottt and his cronies are worse than Trump and very sly. Abbott passed a 2B bill that clearly stated it was for Mental Health, upon reading it, I descoved it was for building more jails and expaining the ones we have. No services for those in need were included. I don’t say that to get a rant going, just as an example of the type of Governor and the politics of Texas. Texas is still a growing market and large companies will continue to move here because it not only savs them money but also because of the talent in the state. There are so many great universities including teaching hospitals that finding the right care for your health is possible. When you get a sign from God, which I think your husband did, it’s time to boogie! 🙂 Best of luck.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. Being a Texan, you have much to share!
Just from my travels over the last few years, it’s been incredible to experience the literal change of climate depending on where you are in the state. Everything from the people to the landscape to the weather is vastly diverse. We’re trapped indoors here in the winter so there’s a trade-off usually no matter where you live. We have crazy high gas bills for heat.
I look forward to learning more about the state and appreciate your comments!

I forgot about your high winter bills. It’s a great trade off if you can travel to experience some of the things you’ll miss back home. At least no blizzards and frozen winters for months at a time. I would also add that the Tollways are great because thy take the money and keep the roads repaired and there’s no trash and they are maintained and much fater way to get around in the city. I would recommend avoiding the areas near the coast because every year it gets hit by a hurricane and the lights and water can be out for weeks. The highways can be a mess, some areas are not maintaned well and you’ll hit some deep pits. West of Fort Worth and East Texas seem to get more rain as well as just south of Dallas. Depending on what city you want to live close to or not, the Hill Country is beautiful and there are activities and festivals happening often. Austin Area is nice but pricing now that all the big companies have moved in. If you can get far enough out Austin is a great city and has a beautiful lake. I can’t wait to hear what move you two will make next. Two great magazines to subscribe to are Texas Highway and Texas Fish & Wildlife, they will tell you all about areas of Texas, what’s going on as well as a bit of history. I quite enjoy them. 🙂

Thank you so very much for these added thoughts! I appreciate all that you have included here – thank you🤍.
My oldest lived in Dallas last year, so that gave me even more travels and Texas experiences. Our family wholeheartedly agrees that the hill country with the lake is beautiful. The weather is better year round there and blessedly absent the offensive Houston humidity.
Unless you live or have traveled in Texas, people don’t realize that cities can be 5 and 10 hours apart from one another.
Those TX highways though! We laugh at my son-in-law walking and talking slower than us fast New Yorkers, but Texans drive at 80 and 90+ miles an hour, which is normal!!😣😫🙏🏻

Oh, yes and the farther away from town you get the faster the driving until you reach the small towns. Sounds like you have a good grip on Texas already. I live north of Dallas in Plano, it’s a great city and has access to several toolroads so many cities are close. 🙂

I pray you will enjoy a move South. I grew up in TN, lived on Long Island for 50 years, in England for 2, and in NC for 10. Fabulous people are everywhere.

Clearly you have set up home and family in very different places and built relationships in all of them.

Wow, you have gone through a lot of changes in the last couple years and have a big decision ahead of you. God will definitely guide you in the right direction according to His will. Having once lived in the state next door to Texas (Oklahoma), I know how great Texas is and it’s even more attractive now. We always enjoyed our travels there yet didn’t even see half of what it has to offer. But I know the allure of Virginia too. I’ve always loved that state as well but also knew I couldn’t stand its hot, humid summers so never considered living there.

I completely understand how much you want to be near your grown-up kids. Only one of our three lives near us with her husband and our oldest grandchild. Our oldest daughter and her husband live in his home state (Kentucky) and our youngest and his wife and three of our grandchildren live on the western side of Ohio only minutes away from Michigan near our daughter-in law’s parents. They all are too far away in my estimation and we don’t get to see them as often as we would like. But then, that was also the life my hubby and I lived. In the first 20 years of our marriage, we lived very far away from our families. But God always has His purpose for us, no matter what. It’s just hard to wait on His timing sometimes.

Thank you for sharing your life experiences. It blesses me to read these comments. My husband and I aren’t tight with our biological families so our kids are everything … our closest “family”. The mere thought of all of us not in the same zip code once grandchildren arrive makes me deeply sad. I do accept it’s in God’s hands and you and others are examples of those who have found a way to manage the disappointment. Good to know you enjoyed your TX travels while residing in OK. Your words express how much you now love PA and thank God you have your daughter and granddaughter in town!💗💗

I was not surprised to read the comment about the governor. He would be one of my main reasons for not moving to TX. Personal opinion only.

Moving can be a difficult decision.

I’m going through stuff like that right now. I hate where I live… more specifically, I hate what this state and my city have become. I feel very out of place here. I have no friends left in my own city proper, and despite being fairly large by numbers, it’s a terrible place to meet people, especially for someone like me. I do have some friends in surrounding cities, but it seems like socializing for me these days means being in the car for 30-60 minutes each way just to hang out with a group of people that’s maybe one good friend and a bunch of other people I don’t particularly like.

But it also feels like moving is off the table. It would be a huge step back for me financially, because compared to other states, my salary is inflated for the high cost of living here, but my own personal cost of living is unusually low. And I don’t want to leave my job, because I really do feel like it’s a positive environment to work. And, perhaps most importantly, God clearly answered a prayer a few years ago that he still had work for me to do here… except I’m not sure what that work is. He hasn’t spoken clearly on this since then, so I tend to think that he hasn’t changed his mind. But I’m confused about why he would keep me in a place where I’m miserable if I don’t have a clear reason to be here.
