Rose of Sharon

We have several Rose of Sharon shrubs around the porch and sides of the house. Despite the name, the flowers aren’t roses. They are actually part of the hibiscus family. I read on a gardening website that this bush “thrives on neglect”! That couldn’t be more true because I’m not much of a gardener and these bushes are wildly growing, blooming far more than usual this summer!

Your Rose of Sharon blooms are lovely. I have some along the garden fence and a few next to the house.

They are so easy to care for, aren’t they? I do a little pruning in the fall, and the summer weather does the rest!

We have many Rose of Sharon trees around our home as well–all blooming wildly, and attracting many hummingbirds. 🙂 They also have lots of babies–the hibiscus trees that is–and are fun to give away or replant. 🙂

Last week, I was so happy that I saw a hummingbird for the first time this summer hovering inside one of the bushes!
Each summer, I normally see them several times, but not this year. They are a joy to watch!

They are beautiful. We had to cut mine down when a tree grew up in the middle of it and a windstorm almost uprooted both. I enjoyed yours.

It was a redbud. It survived.

They have honestly been the easiest flowers to grow and the bonus is that they add so much to a yard when they are in bloom. Thank you for viewing and for your comment!

This flower always reminds me of The Grapes of Wrath… Tom Joad’s sister was named “Rose of Sharon.” But Steinbeck always intentionally misspelled dialogue to match characters’ accents, and the Joads, being rural Oklahoma Dust Bowl refugees, always called her “Rosasharn.” If I remember right, the name first appears in the book in spoken dialogue (or maybe I just didn’t notice it until a line of spoken dialogue), so I was very confused what that word meant the first time I read it, and I had a good laugh once I saw the character’s name spelled properly outside of dialogue.
