We have several Rose of Sharon shrubs around the porch and sides of the house. Despite the name, the flowers aren’t roses. They are actually part of the hibiscus family. I read on a gardening website that this bush “thrives on neglect”! That couldn’t be more true because I’m not much of a gardener and these bushes are wildly growing, blooming far more than usual this summer!

They have honestly been the easiest flowers to grow and the bonus is that they add so much to a yard when they are in bloom. Thank you for viewing and for your comment!

This flower always reminds me of The Grapes of Wrath… Tom Joad’s sister was named “Rose of Sharon.” But Steinbeck always intentionally misspelled dialogue to match characters’ accents, and the Joads, being rural Oklahoma Dust Bowl refugees, always called her “Rosasharn.” If I remember right, the name first appears in the book in spoken dialogue (or maybe I just didn’t notice it until a line of spoken dialogue), so I was very confused what that word meant the first time I read it, and I had a good laugh once I saw the character’s name spelled properly outside of dialogue.
