Green Lake

Late last summer, my husband was traveling for work and told me about this interesting lake he discovered near Syracuse, New York. A few weeks later, I tagged along for a quick two-day trip to see this unique find.

Green Lake, located outside of Syracuse in Fayetteville, NY is known as a meromictic lake. That means the surface and bottom waters don’t mix during seasonal changes like many other bodies of water. Green Lake and the adjacent Round Lake are considered glacial lakes, possibly containing ancient plant and animal life. Each one has easy trails that we walked.

With the very long winters we experience in the northeast, waters are often murky. This green, clear lake was truly a sight!

Very cool! We saw one in the Yukon in Canada that was the most startling green… a glacial lake as well! I didn’t know there were some in NY…

We lived in this area for 10 years and absolutely LOVED going to Green Lakes! It’s very popular for walkers and runners alike, and a must for families – all year long. It is such a treasure. Lucky you to be able to experience the beauty! 🙂

So interesting that you lived in NY for 10 years and now reside in Ireland!! We were in Ireland a few years ago and the rural countryside was our very favorite part of the entire trip.
Yes, we are a few hours from that part of NY but it’s been nice to travel there, exploring some of the lakes and old railroad trails. Thanks for visiting!

I can’t help but think of Chingachgook and his son Uncas traveling across lovely colonial locations like these in a James Fenimore Cooper novel. Thanks for sharing.

Your comment led me to research the novel since I was not familiar with these characters. Thank you for checking out my site and the Green Lake pic.
