Beauty Alongside the Inconsistencies

If you regularly read my blog, you know I fly frequently and 99% of the time, I travel alone. While I’ve catalogued a few air travel stories, there are also peculiar inconsistencies.

Some are no big deal. Others? TSA might need some training.

…Self-Defense

In January, I accidentally left a pepper spray (self-defense spray) in my carry-on bag and didn’t notice it until days later. I was stunned the bag wasn’t flagged but I considered it a rare oversight.

For kicks and giggles, I intentionally left the pepper spray in my carry-on for my flight a month later. Fully prepared to be pulled out of line, scolded and receive a mini lesson on the do’s and don’ts of passenger security, I watched the agent stare at my bag passing through the x-ray machine and down the conveyor belt alongside my laptop.

Reaching for my bag, I hesitated slightly, thinking for sure I would be approached. I was not.

I kept the spray with me four more times. Not once has it been identified and removed.

But…

My daughter flew from Texas to South Carolina a couple weeks ago. I handed her a spray and told her about my TSA undercover project.

She protested but packed it in a carry-on pocket anyway. My girl’s bag was flagged and the spray confiscated.

…Shoes

I wore the same travel sneakers twice while walking through the scanner. They have metal shoelace rings I never noticed until the third trip when TSA asked me to remove my sneakers and walk through again.

…No Passport? No Problem!

A fellow (male) passenger was telling me about a female passenger who got through security with a wink and a smile – without her passport, no military ID, nor a driver’s license! She was mildly upset that she “forgot” her identification, but according to the man’s retelling, started flirting with the TSA agent and made her way through. The man who shared this witnessed the breach of security personally, still appalled from it happening three months earlier.

My New Practices: Facial Recognition

I started to waive the photograph taken by TSA at security.

There are plenty of cameras all over the airport terminal buildings taking live video of me going into the ladies room, getting dinner and reading a book.

Last week, en route to the airport, my vehicle -and me in it- were photographed at five locations on the highway before I stopped counting.

The additional photo is overkill.

Body Scanners

Since raising my arms in the body scanners so often can’t possibly be good, I’ve started getting a pat down. (Technically, the screening booths are identified as “millimeter-wave technology” not radiation, but I’m continuing with the pat downs.)

Things that never grow old about air travel?

The Ascent ~~~

Once settled into the window seat, the Boeing 737 (the size of a small office building) impressively rises into the clouds and I think of my family touring the Wright Brother’s National Memorial in North Carolina.

Imagine if the brothers could see Joby Aviation presently testing electric air taxis!

As the plane climbs, the racing cars on winding, circular highways below me slow. From 35,000 feet up, houses and sprawling subdivisions shrink.

The higher I go, daily frustrations lessen.

Slow Wi-Fi, traffic, long lines… things that aren’t really problems at all.

The Cruising Altitude ~~~

And the sky He created for us to enjoy…

Feeling closer to the moon.

The Descent ~~~

Thousands of flickering lights from homes and businesses in the big cities.

Wide-open farms and acreage in smaller towns.

~~~~~~
The initial frustrations with commercial flying are real. But ultimately, there is still something awesome about joining the clouds, slowing down and appreciating the beauty all around.
Thank you for visiting my blog today, I appreciate you being here. Have a wonderful week ahead!
    I thoroughly enjoyed this! The quote about distancing oneself to gain a clearer perspective is particularly insightful. Since I only fly a few times a year, each trip is always an exciting adventure. However, most of the time, my flights have been relatively smooth. Are there any major U.S. airports that you tend to avoid?
      I feel the same about the quote! I don’t fly out west, the furthest is Texas/Illinois though someday I’d like to. Thank you for commenting and have a wonderful day!
    You’re very brave to do experiments with TSA, Elena. Hubs and I have a standing joke about me looking like a criminal. I genetically have under eye bags since my late 20’s. Each and every time we fly, I get pulled aside to have my hands scanned for drug residue. I’m sure it’s the under eye bags, lol.
      Oh my gosh! I’ve never heard of someone being sidelined and having hands scanned for drugs. Glad you can laugh about it since it sounds like at this point you expect it!
    The inconsistencies of TSA are incredible–but it’s a reflection of our own messiness in life, our own personal inconsistencies. But I do love the quote you shared–distancing yourself to see things more clearly. Sometimes stepping away lowers our sense of urgency, anxiety, and worry long enough to realize life isn’t under our control.
      So well-said about the messiness in human nature and therefore TSA employees taking it to work with them.
      Moving away a bit always provides perspective.
    I used to fly quite a bit. I always enjoyed the take off – and once up in the clouds but now they pack us in like sardines and it’s not fun like it used to be. If I didn’t have all the lines, waiting etc it would be enjoyable.
    I have lost so many pepper sprays to TSA. Sigh.
      So crazy how the scanning/detection varies (or reflects human oversight).
    We just finished travel from MT to TN to PA and home. In wheel chairs, they push us through security, scan our hands, and then pat down the wheelchair. Go figure!!
      Interesting that the wheelchairs get patted down! Other than the seat (which you’re in), what can they even “feel”?🤔
    I rarely fly. So far I’ve made one airplane trip in the 2020s, and I had two in the 2010s. Everything about flying still feels new and unfamiliar (usually in an exciting way) to me. It’s strange to me that a lot of people consider going to the airport something routine.When I was about 15, I was in Spanish class at school, and we had to do a vocabulary-related project where we had to draw an airport and label various things in the airport in Spanish. I found the project very difficult because I had never seen the inside of an airport before*, and I was too self-conscious about this to say anything, so I just kind of faked it based on some drawings in the textbook, which in that chapter were also related to airports and travel.*According to Mom, I was on a plane once as a baby, but I was much too young to have any memory of that. My first airplane trip that I remember was at age 20.
      Taking such few flights isn’t a bad thing. It used to be special and fun but can be an unnecessarily time-consuming, often frustrating experience. I focus on gratitude for safety…
    I was pulled out of line by TSA and basically sexually assulted in front of everyone in line. I hit my last straw and was abut to sream rape but the asses waved me through. They touched my breast and in between my legs more than I can count. I lateer read that TSA changed it’s policy because so many women were sharing similar stories.
      I’m sorry you had such a terrible experience, Melinda. Yes, perhaps they changed something because even though I voluntarily request the pat down, they ask me directly and clearly if I want to be taken to a separate room before they begin and then tell me exactly what they’re about to do before they do it.
      Right? Delightful peace when cruising with the clouds⛅️☁️🌤️.
    I almost never fly anymore. TSA’s inconsistencies is one reason. Hostile airline staff is another. Fortunately, my husband used to be a private pilot, so I had many years of all the fun of flying without the hassles.
      Oh, how wonderful that must have been! I recently checked on a private flight for people to attend a wedding and the rates were exorbitant. It was quite a distance so perhaps shorter distances wouldn’t be cost prohibitive. I’m envious of your phrase, “the FUN of flying”!😅
    For me, flying just isn’t fun anymore, not because of the actual flying experience but because of all the other stuff. It is a bit alarming that you passed through so many times with the pepper spray and the woman without proper ID made it through too. And then on the other hand, the over abundance of photographing of us should also make us concerned. Ack, enough ranting on my part. But I did enjoy your post!
      I agree with your comments and each one could be an entire discussion. The changes involving continual public photography/videography is for sure concerning. These new normals are so readily accepted by most…
