By the time you read this, we may already know if Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow in Pennsylvania this morning. Either six more weeks of winter, or we’re on our way to Spring. Either way, Happy Groundhog Day!
Based upon the frigid temps here in NY (along with solid history of winter weather continuing through April), I’m predicting that little woodchuck scurries right back to hibernation.
February is a curious month. Some people are shopping for tropical vacations, while others are still enjoying their Christmas lights. The good news is, we’re halfway between the winter solstice and spring equinox here in the northern hemisphere. Winter still dominates, but Spring is closer than last month.
This halfway mark is one of many reasons the beginning of February holds the tradition of Groundhog Day. When winter starts to drag, folklore like Groundhog Day and February holidays like Valentine’s Day keep things lighter, offering a little fun. The bottom line: winter is half over.
I wasn’t going to continue 10 at the End into 2026, but I found myself writing a January one! Whether you’re sipping hot chocolate in cozy sweats or trying on your summer shorts, here are my reflections, observations, gratitude…
1. Melting ice alongside my house reminds me of April in New York, but the sounds out my window are Texas in January.
2. My twins turned 29. I cannot believe they – and I – are that old.
3. Reread Charles Dickens, The Life of our Lord and listened to Handel’s Messiah.
4. Romantic comedy movie nights.
5. I’m beginning to appreciate the mild temps in the Lone Star State, enabling me to be outdoors.
6. New music from my daughters (without them sending via Spotify, I would be utterly unaware of new releases).
7. My son won two major awards at his company. I’m so proud and still teary.
8. Started a Bible study at our new church.
9. Despite the cold weather, the days are growing longer.
10. Very delayed but safe flights back to New York, where I write to you today.
