October Morning🍁

My youngest turns 27 today. At the exact minute she was born, we will all get on FaceTime and sing Happy Birthday to her in Texas.

On my morning walk yesterday, I considered all the years where a ‘day-before-my-kids’-birthday’ walk would have been out of the question.

I would have been much too busy for listening to the crickets and admiring fall foliage.

Days leading up to the kids’ birthdays, the house required decorating – whether or not the party would be at home or elsewhere. There would be sleepovers. Party favors, outfits, snacks. Cakes to pick up at the bakery. Decorating required at least a day or two. Birthdays and holiday seasons are a big deal in our family.

But yesterday…I enjoyed a very early morning walk thinking about the past while looking forward to the future. Crickets accompanied me along the colorful path, still singing in the early morning hours.

While many past Octobers brought temperatures below 20°F by now – killing the fragile-winged chorus – this year remains unseasonably warm… 80°F straight through the foreseeable meteorological future here in New York.

A few birds chimed into the autumn cricket symphony, but most migratory birds have left for warmer states. A sizeable flock of Canadian geese flew overhead.

The squirrels rustled the drying leaves on branches, scurrying to pack their final supplies for the long winter ahead. A few ducks floated on the pond, bobbing their heads and paddling their orange feet.

The extraordinary beauty of autumn never grows old. Each October day offers something new. As the leaves change, beauty is found even in the brown, withered and crunchy leaves underfoot.

I relished the peace of walking without a long to-do list waiting, but empty-nesting continues to be an adjustment. While I love fewer responsibilities, I still miss the constant togetherness.

Happy Monday kind reader and enjoy the week ahead!

Happy Birthday to her! Photos make me look forward to Fall even more. In Texas we’ll be lucky if it arrives by the end of the month, it gets later every year it seems.

Thank you so much, Melinda. Yes, it’s been difficult for my daughter to adjust to the weather in Texas. She misses full autumn splendor! I hope you get to see some color changes soon.

The neighborhood I live in and most of the city doesn’t see much color change. Maybe a hint of yellow and if lucky and red.

That is definitely a contrast compared to here in the northeast. But I will be delighted to take walks in January and February in Texas when that is impossible here for months….❄️❄️

I always love those kinds of walks, Mama. I’d like to try the crunchy footsteps on those brown leaves. The ducks look contented.

So many of us truly appreciate the beauty that fall offers. Yes, the ducks were funny bobbing their heads and splashing around. Enjoy all of your leafy walks this season!🍂🍂

Thanks for the heartfelt prose and photos, MLM! Yup, I treasure the memories of when our kids were at home and we were all together. I love Autumn, but also dread the coming leaf-collection campaign.

Ha! Those seemingly small crunchy leaves sure add up into giant piles very quickly! Take care doing all of your raking and bagging!🍂🍁

Missing the beauty now🍁 but I think in NC you get outside more in the winter months than you did living in NY?

I was working until we moved, so I went out every day in NY. Now I have the luxury of choosing when I will go out.

I hear you. The peace and tranquility of empty nesting does take some time to get used to but when they all come home with grandchildren in tow for holidays or just family togetherness, it’s enough to fill your empty spaces once more from time to time. We do arrive at that place where we relish the quietness.

Beautiful colors – lovely post. Here in MT we had a week or so of changing colors with magnificent yellows and oranges and occasional bright red bushes. Then two nights it fell below freezing and it all turned brown. Wind came and blew the leaves away. Sad! I’d sure like our 4 seasons to be more equal in length!

Wow, that was an early freeze, but probably not early for Montana. There have been many years we had snow the first week of October, so you’re not alone. Lucky, this year has been a spectacular autumn.
