Choosing To Overcome vs. Giving Up

Published by

I sat across from her, listening to the same stories I’ve heard before. Memorized recounts of every wrong delivered, minor betrayals, unkind words and health challenges. All real, valid hurts and hardships.

Most people across the globe have lived through similar experiences.

The difference: she decided that her experiences are unique, worse than others – and bitterness has taken hold. She’s labeled anyone with an extra dollar, stronger body, better relationships, etc., as magically handed these things…theirs a life of ease…a better stack of cards dealt to them vs. her.

Untrue in her case – and, for many others who decide and insist that the world is against only them.

After the draining conversation, I drove home contemplating what makes an overcomer vs. a giver-upper.

I’ve never known an adult who entirely avoided hardships or harsh words. Hard times can bring us down physically, spiritually and/or mentally. Harsh words plummet our spirit. But, as Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds us, “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

We have tumbled…perhaps from our own poor choices or circumstances out of our control.

…we have also risen-which isn’t easy, but usually possible.

We can let go and move on – or, give unfairness, hardships, etc., more real estate in our heads – keeping us low.

Leaders, entrepreneurs, people in good relationships, gold medalists, mentally and physically healthy people we see up close or at a distance…they likely earned their way…people we see after the illness, after losing millions and rebuilding, after investing decades of time in their loved ones…after years working dawn to dusk…

There are famous people who endured, persevered and we learned about them on the other side – after they overcame odds: Vickor E. Frankl, Nelson Mandela, Nick Vujicic, Maya Angelou, JK Rowling, Corrie Ten Boom – to name a few.

There are significantly more non-famous individuals who got up, decided to let go of the bad and move forward.

We can too.

Here is Monday inspiration and a hope for us to push through adversity and overcome!

“The Lord allowed us to suffer, but it was not without purpose.” Corrie Ten Boom

“Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve…” Malcolm X

“Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33NLT

“In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world.” John 16:33MSG

Thanks for the post, MLM. I had a friend, and he was my best friend, who descended into the depths of “Woe is me” depression following his second messy divorce. He had consulted several therapists and tried several depression medications. I conversed with him several times about the Gospel and the joy and peace that comes with salvation in Jesus Christ but he was so focused on his miseries, he wouldn’t listen. I eventually had to break off ties because I felt like I needed a therapist after every time we got together.

Your friemd’s story is truly unfortunate. We can do so much and offer years of encouragement – leaving us overwhelmed – followed by a need to distance ourselves.

Love the quotes, MLM. Wish those who need them the most would heed them but they are also the least likely to read them or believe them.

I love this post. My mother was a survivor, never playing the role of victim, and an inspiration to her family. I remember an inservice focused on kids who overcame their circumstances and those who succumbed to a destiny of failure. Unsurprisingly, we drew no conclusions. It is such a deep subject and depends on faith in God and internal fortitude.

You add important points starting with not accepting the role of victim… understanding that all endure at some point or another. Deep subject for sure-and faith in God and internal fortitude vary greatly. Your Mom was a beautiful role model for you🩷.

There’s an epidemic of victimhood nowadays that people think gets them sympathy, but it’s usually the opposite reaction that they get.

There but for the grace of God go I…. Yes, we are called to persevere but there are times when we need help outside self. It is in those moments that friends, family and government assistance is invaluable!

For sure. There are times in life when we “can’t” and God places others in our life to help and lift us up. This post is about the average, day to day happenings that we all endure, the hurts we collect, and the decision to let go…💕

I agree with one of your commenters that there is an epidemic of victimhood. We hear these “tales of woe” everywhere it seems. We recently visited an historic place and listened to the guide tell us about that particular person’s hardships in life which he rose above and became an important person in our state’s history. I commented at the time, “People were made of stronger stuff back then” and the guide readily agreed.
