The Preschool Library Years – National Library Week

Published by

on

During the toddler years, I piled my three small children into the car at 9am twice a week en route to the local library. When they were very young, they sat for reading circles and participated in craft classes related to books. As they got older, they joined reading programs and summer competitions.

I feel nostalgic thinking about snack bags clutched by dimpled toddler hands as we meandered our way from the minivan into the library.

We spent hours searching shelves, the kids eyeing up DVDs (pre-streaming days) which were a special treat after we picked out our books and read for a while. My eyes followed tiny legs exploring titles, sometimes standing in the same space for a half hour, unable to put down a picture book.

Like many parents, we were just starting out and didn’t have lots of money or lofty professional titles during the toddler years. No matter the achievements or earnings in the subsequent life seasons, nothing brought that level of leisure or contentment. Walking into the library on a clear, crisp autumn morning with my three little people… I was so happy.

The library is one of the few spaces where time slows. American culture tends to resist a slow pace of life. Unhurried feels less productive. Some friends couldn’t wait for the six weeks post-birth for daycare drop off to “get busy again”. Life felt too slow, thus frustrating for them.

For me, those were easy years. There were tantrums and a steady mess on the floor. But there was giggling, playfulness, wide-eyes learning something new every day. Others complained about toddler days dragging, while I relished the slow time.

A few months ago, I renewed a very outdated library card. I was shocked there were still “cards” and not some app I needed to download and scan upon arrival/checkout. As mentioned during my moving posts – I donated a couple hundred books last summer but still have many. I have a tendency to buy books more than borrow them. But, I’ve been back to the library several times since renewing the card, and I plan to continue.

The only thing missing as I wander into the library: my three little people, now young adults. Sigh.

When I was a post librarian, I used to run some story hours, including evening pajama story hours on occasion. To me 3 & 4 year olds were the perfect ages– 1 & 2 year olds just didn’t have the attention span to sit for even a short story. What I did not like were parents who assumed that the library was a baby siting service where they could let their toddlers go free range. Letting the kids sweep all of the picture books off the low shelves or pulling the cards out of the card catalog back in the 80s and 90s before online catalogs were also not favorites. I still occasionally use finger games from that period with a few neighborhood preschoolers.

I agree that 3-4 year olds are usually attentive and genuinely interested. Disappointing to read about the parents you encountered! Books all over the place reminds me of grownups who leave clothes in fitting rooms. I can’t imagine leaving my little ones at the library! You really have collected some stories through your experience. It’s really nice that you connect with the neighborhood children!📚

Thanks, MLM. I am not surprised to hear the you did not allow your toddlers to go free-range in the library.

I agree that raising children is a special time. I stayed home with my children for 18 years and it was the happiest time of my life. I think women today are missing out on the best part of life when they work. Great post, ML! God bless you, today! 🙏

When I was a child, going to the library was a big deal. Afterwards, we went to McDonald’s. It was our family night out. But this weekly event instilled in me a love for books that I passed on to my daughter.

I enjoyed reading about your lovely library days. I went in person to renew my card a couple of weeks ago. I hadn’t been in the building for several years. Even large print books are hard for me to read, so I will check out ebooks when I’m alone again. Lise will be here a few more days before she goes back to Denmark.

It’s good that the library has e-books for check out. Your comment makes me think of the library growing alongside us…from toddler picture books to large print and then e-books so we can enlarge fonts even more.
I know you’ll treasure the last few days of Lise’s visit🩷.

I love going to the library, but I buy more books than I borrow.
I spend more time at my library going to special events, and classes they hold.
It’s a beautiful vibrant place and like you said, time really does slow down!

Your description is true about the vibrancy!📚 We are similar in buying books. I love having a mini library for reference, re-reads, etc. I’m mostly a non-fiction reader so I don’t own many novels outside of the classics. Thank you for reading and your comment!

My granddaughter-in-law and our great-granddaughter have reached reading their 1000th story and my great-granddaughter is just over two. Her vocabulary amazes me. She loves books.

Such an extraordinary achievement that will serve them well for life!! Reading honestly improves vocabulary, especially when young. It sounds like your family prioritizes reading far above phones and screens!🙌🏻
