We had been in Texas for Christmas, spending the holidays with our youngest and her husband. Our plan was to enjoy the final couple of days of our Christmas vacation at the in-laws beach house before heading back to NY.
Our daughter and her hubby live nearly five hours from the house location in Crystal Beach, Texas. After four hours of driving, we noticed significant brush and tree damage along the highway.
Then, we were detoured, approaching this scene:

The moment we turned around, the phones started lighting up with storm warnings and texts from friends regarding our travel. Too late!
After a short detour, we drove onto the island. We noticed nearly all of the houses were dark. Crystal Beach was in a power-outage with the exception of those with generators. We climbed up to the top deck, figuring we would stay a while before deciding whether to drive back. There was only an hour of daylight left.
We all forgot the beach house doors are electric – excellent for storm protection, bad without electricity.
We took in the lovely post-storm sunset, and got back into the packed vehicles.

Half-way home, we drove the remaining two hours in the worst fog I have ever experienced in my life. There were moments we could not see the lines on the road. The entire ride felt like were were driving off of a cliff in front of us. It was non-stop prayer…thankfully, both vehicles arrived home safely.
We have awakened to seven feet of snow in our neck of the New York woods, but the electrical poles remain upright. I have seen Texas-storm footage on the news but never up-close. My silly complaints about “high winds” here are comedic compared to what whirls down in the great south!

Thank you for reading and have a terrific Tuesday!
My first post about Crystal Beach, Texas is here.
