The Season of Gratitude

Published by

on

Today marks the start of the 11th month of 2024. The season of gratitude, Thanksgiving, lingering leaves that eventually descend, reducing trees to barren branches. The first freeze often happens in November, and the frigid morning air is welcome against my face.

I have always loved October through December. Though we New Yorkers complain miserably about the wild weather changes, there is excitement about the crisp air and cloudy skies. For most of us in the northeast, we will receive the first significant snowfall in November.

There are stronger traditions in these last months of the year than any other for us as a family. This autumn season is an unusual one. As an empty-nest-mid-lifer, traditions already flexed once the kids left for college. Instead of chopping down the Christmas tree the first days of December, there were years we waited until the week before Christmas to ensure everyone was present in the forest.

Then, when two children relocated, then relocated back home, other traditions had to be altered. We needed to be flexible, and on rare occasions, a few traditions were missed altogether to accommodate new circumstances and beloved new people in our tiny clan. It’s my belief that traditions make us feel welcome, loved and remain a steady in a world anything but. I will stand strong for the family traditions to continue once we are resettled into our eventual new home.

Just two days away, November 3rd at 2am is the end of daylight savings. I love the β€œfall back” extra hour of sleep, but dread the dark 4:30pm skies.

The highlight of November is Thanksgiving. In the last couple decades, Thanksgiving has officially become the overlooked holiday by most, since Christmas decorating and shopping advertisements have been in front of us since July. Thanksgiving gets one shelf in a store and Christmas gets half the entire retail space. While I love everything-Christmas and definitely start collecting gifts by late October, I want to be intentional about gratitude. Not just on November 28th, but all month long.

This month, I’ll be posting not 100%-silent Silent Sundays and Thankful Thursdays. Texas Tuesdays will continue, but won’t be weekly.

Thank you for sharing your time with me on this Friday…I wish you a relaxing weekend and blessed November.

You echo my sentiments exactly here. If only more folks would dedicate this month (really every day, every month) to expressing thankfulness, wouldn’t our world be more positive and enjoyable? Hope you have a blessed month full of moments for gratitude.

I agree about the shifting of traditions – we have to modify but can’t discard them. I tried to ditch the “elf gift” for my sons (elves are sick of making toys so they give underwear) once they hit about 25. There was an uproar! Fortunately I had purchased socks for my husband and ended up gifting them to the boys to maintain peace. They are 36 & 37 and they still expect elf gifts! And son#2 has a GF and had told her about the elf gifts and so I’m now purchasing socks for her! It is funny how some traditions never end! (I can see me at 90 buying underwear for my 60+ yr old sons!!)

Last year was socks – this year the elves are thinking undershirts (which works for the guys but the GF? no way am I buying a bra for her!)….

Is it normal to put up your Christmas decorations on November 1 where you are, or are my friends just weird?

I love when it starts to get cool and crisp in the mornings. I also love the south where we get some cold weather but ot all winter and very seldom a frozen cold.

One of our youngens lives in upper state NY and LOVES it and wishes it were colder there! Go figure, LOL!

    Love the post,

    Blessings~

Everyone is so unique in their weather preferencesπŸ˜„. The nice thing for you is you can β€œvisit” the cold but then go back to reasonable temperatures! Here in NY it’s been unseasonably warm this autumn. Have a wonderful day!🧑🍁

I had not thought of that but it is so true! I always thought I would love living somewhere there was lots of snow-like Alaska. But after spending a winter and spring in Pennsylvania on a temp job, I quickly changed my mind. Goodness, there were icicles over 10 feet long and several feet around hanging on buildings! AND, the mud in the spring. . . I will say though, that for the most part the landscape was beautiful and those first breaths outside were invigorating. However, the COLD!!
Our kid mentioned that, she moved there to have cooler, colder weather.
        Have a fantastic week!!πŸ’–πŸ‚
