Magnolia: Waco, Texas

Texas Tuesdays continue…

The mega empire known as Magnolia began with the remarkably successful HGTV show Fixer Upper. Though I only watched a handful of episodes over the years, I took more interest once I visited Waco.

My daughter only lived in Waco for a few months after college, but we have taken drives to Magnolia four times. During my last visit, we stopped in just for coffee at Magnolia Press and a treat at the bakery. The latte was the greater lure for me than the cupcake, though both were delicious!

The other visits included full meals at Magnolia Table, which is a short drive from the Silos property. On my first tour, I incorrectly assumed the restaurant was on the same site as the shops and other dining options.

In my opinion, the Silos were a brilliant move by the Gaines’. Prior to Fixer Upper, the mention of Waco, TX often brought David Koresh and the Waco Siege to mind. Yes, there is Baylor University and a few other notable things in the city, but not many. Taking a run-down area in a town with an unfortunate reputation and transforming it into a pleasant, delicious tourist attraction was smart business.

There are several small, boutique shops on the property, along with the larger Magnolia Market and Magnolia Home. These were a few fun finds, mostly from the shop No. 16.

The Old Church on the property has an interesting story. Here is a snapshot from the inside:

Food trucks also offer several fun options, including the Sweet Tea truck which is a regular stop for my daughter. Other thoughtful touches more for the local community include Silobrations and Christmas at the Silos.

Thank you for joining me on this week’s Texas Tour!

It must be a fun place — my Oklahoma niece and her family have visited there and they loved it.

Yes, Oklahoma is the north neighbor of TX-probably not a terrible drive to Waco! I agree with your niece, Magnolia is a nice place to visit.

We lived in Oklahoma for a few years but that was LONG before the Magnolia fame became a thing.

I haven’t been yet but to sub to the magazine and buy online from Magnolia. We had planned to go this Fall but so much has changed. Another year.

There is a nice amount of shopping and dining without being too big or overwhelming. You’ll likely enjoy it when you get there!

Your post is excellent! I have a Magnolia cookbook. I still have a lot of recipes to try from its pages. It is terrific that the name of the town will bring happier memories to people’s minds through the Magnolia Brand.

It sounds like you are very familiar with Texas from living there. Our youngest lives in TX now and it’s been fun exploring. I hope you get to Magnolia for a visit!

I am a little familiar with Texas. It’s truly a HUGE state!
If I can cordinate with my sister that lives in the DFW area, I think we’ll both go to Magnolia.

God bless you on the drive between Dallas and Waco (TX highways are a wild place!). Once you arrive, it will be a lovely time!
