Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, London

Continuing the London tour on this (wordy) Wordless Wednesday, my daughters and I did the “touristy” things, including Big Ben and Buckingham Palace.

Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the Great Clock of Westminster, which is located in the Elizabeth Tower at the end of the Houses of Parliament which I included in Monday’s post. My 27-yr old daughter had been to London previously, but for my 26-yr old daughter and myself, this was a first visit.

My youngest encouraged me to watch The Crown, which I unsuccessfully attempted twice. At her continued urging and winter weather trapping me indoors last year, the third time was the royal charm and I finally invested and ultimately appreciated the storyline. Having watched The Crown made visiting Buckingham Palace more interesting for me.

As you can see, even on a regular ‘ol Tuesday when we were there last week, the outside of Buckingham Palace is very crowded. I honestly expected the entire area to be empty on a weekday during non-tourist season. That was a highly inaccurate assumption on my part!

Next, I’ll take you to the stunning countryside which was nearly three hours outside of London.

Thanks MLM! I’m enjoying the photos! My wife is “pressuring” me to take a trip to England, Scotland, and Ireland where her family roots are since we visited Poland (my ancestral home) in 2007.

Of the three you list, we really enjoyed Ireland. Not sure where your wife’s Irish family is located, but while Dublin is fun, the countryside is peaceful and gorgeous. Any of the three will be an enjoyable visit!🇮🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

You likely visited many of the same places we just did! The London area offered more than we could get to, but we had full days and nights – all great experiences.

When we visited Buckingham Palace to view the changing of the guard, we got there early and had excellent front row standing views in front of the gate. My camera lens cover fell off my camera and landed just past where I could grab it. One of the passing guards (before the ceremony began) reluctantly paused, bent over and retrieved the cover, handing it back to me between the gate rungs. Some father asked if his son could squeeze in front of us for a better view. We reluctantly agreed. The kid behaved perfectly and his father remained standing behind without also trying to squeeze in front of us. So none of my fears happened.

You have such good memories, and when people are well-mannered and behave properly, that is refreshing. We attended the changing of the guard and while we were in the front row, people were squeezing in all around. We were fine, but were ready to leave the crowd once the ceremony was complete.
Thank you for sharing your experience!

Our experience was in the mid 1980s. Might not be like that now. Glad you enjoyed the trip down memory lane.
