You’re Middle-Age When…Morning Routine

Published by

During the morning routine at the kitchen island, you realize that the decades of kid-related conversation between you and your spouse has been replaced by aging-body questions. The conversation goes something like this…

Me: “How is your shoulder this morning?” Husband aggressively grabs shoulder, massaging it, then moves his arm in a wide circle.

Him: “Good. Better than yesterday.” He grins. “I’m closing the pool today. Let’s see how it feels tomorrow!” Buyers of our home requested we close the pool prior to the house closing. Most people with shoulder trouble hire pool-closers. Not my man (I wish he would).

Him: “How is your neck? You seem a bit straighter today.” His face winces while asking.

Me: “I miss the morning questions of ‘Mom, where are my keys? Backpack? Can we go shopping after practice? What are we doing this weekend?’

Sigh.

The favorite pastime of Old Farts (of both sexes), reciting their aches and pains, whether anyone is listening or not. I found when dealing with 80 year olds, if you are in pain, they are in agony; if you have a cold, they have the flu or pneumonia or covid, they will one up you on whatever your ailment is.

Yikes, let’s plan on NOT being that type of old person😅. I can definitely understand how easy it would be to fall into that recitation of aches and pains.

I do too. I had my experience with most (not all) 80 somethings when we moved into Geezer Ghetto which was what we called our only (to date) experience living in an active 55 and over community. We moved as soon as our 18 month lease was over and never looked back.

Oh my gosh-that is an experience! I think people “feel” older just by being around that negativity. Not always but it happens. Good thing you got out. Your GG title of that place – lol!

It was. Maybe when I have a serious health issue or become unsafe to live without assistance, I will reconsider, but not yet!

Sounds familiar. “Good morning! How did you sleep? How are you feeling today?”

Our new morning questions appear to be common among many. Glad we are all walking through it together.
