“Mom, please don’t wear those.”
It was Friday evening and I was getting ready to leave the house. My oldest daughter was over and caught me eyeing my indoor Mom-shoes. For the visual – they are Clarks leather brown loafers, with the firm rubber sole and strong stitching. Ten years old, well-worn and I love them.
“Mom, you’re not going to Wegmans…”
I wasn’t really going to wear them but I was tempted. I had foot surgery in late October and I’m still working on full range of motion. The goal is to be back into higher heels for my son’s June wedding…
Though I gazed longingly, we were headed to a nice place and I own plenty of shoes far more suitable for a Friday night. I’m also aware of the aging forecast where I’ll have to wear comfies to keep balance like everyone when they get older. So for now, I am making the fancier-footwear effort.
Buckling the seatbelt, I chuckled at the two-minute encounter with my daughter and suddenly recalled a reversed conversation with her a decade ago.
Me: “You are absolutely not wearing those shorts to school.”
My girl arrived home from a friend’s house, having borrowed a pair of shorts that showed the tops of her thighs, with the Victoria’s Secret letters PINK scrawled across the bum. She wasn’t allowed to own them, so borrowing was her next best plan.
She laughed. “Mom, everybody has shorts with words on the butt! These are in style!”
You can guess my parental response… “When have I ever cared about ‘everybody’? You are going to dress appropriately and modestly for school.”
“But Mom!”
“No.”
Of course, my thighs are securely hidden and comfy loafers and shorty shorts are not an apples-to-apples comparison, but you get the idea.
My well-worn, old Clarks? I sneak them out every now and then – and, I suspect my daughter may have done the same with the VSPINK shorts😉.
Thank you for reading and have a wonderful weekend!
