Surrounded by an Ice Rink🧊

My kids grew up with long, cold winters and short summers. The endless weeks of gray skies could get depressing, but when pretty snow tumbled down, the beauty was unmatched. The memories of jumping into 10′ snow piles are forever part of my children’s youth.

Here in Texas, I chuckled last week when the nonstop newsreel alerted “winter storm” warnings. It was 65° and sunny.

If a few inches of snow dropped, it certainly wouldn’t stick. Snow would be welcome – said my son-in-law and others – largely preferred to ice. They explained the week-long TX power outage back in 2020 – the result of an ice storm. That experience remains vivid in the minds of Texans who cleaned out the shelves at our local H-E-B grocery store by Wednesday night when I stopped in.

We’ve opened the door and stepped out a few times but have been mostly indoors since Friday. While I’m well-accustomed to being snow-bound, it’s peculiar not seeing salt trucks or for that matter, seeing anything or anyone.

Families aren’t sledding or even walking outdoors – because you can’t. We’re surrounded by ice. As of this morning, schools are still cancelled and businesses remain closed.

The good news is, the current 15° Texas temp will rise considerably by mid-week. Just in time for me to board a plane to NY where I will be greeted with single digits. I’m looking forward to the snow covered trees… hopefully taking some new photos to share.

I wish you a wonderful week ahead, beginning with a good Monday today🙏🏻. Stay warm and safe, as many of you are just reemerging from a wintry weekend!❄️🩵

It’s a weather contrast from here. We’re in summer and the ground is now dry. Keep warm, Mama and stay safe. Enjoy the Wonderland.

Even down here in the RGV, the temperature at 32° F or below for the next couple of days is crippling. It’s impossible to help local folks understand that at our home in Sask Canada, there have been days this past week with windchills of -58° F . People here can’t comprehend that temperature. Although I’m not fond of the chilly days in South Texas, it’s to be expected every winter. At least down here, there’s no snow or ice. And, like you said … It’s only for a few days. At our home in Canada, the cold weather starts in late October and usually isn’t finished until mid April.

Whew, your area of Canada is FAR colder than our Upstate NY weather – and they have some rough weather right now. I’m surprised it drops to freezing and below in the RGV. It’s interesting to learn about the various areas of Texas. Thankfully, you (and I ) can take walks here during winter months that are for certain impossible in Sask with -58° windchills!🥶

Thanks for the photos and text describing the Texas arctic tundra! We got over a foot of snow here in WNY in the last 24 hours and it continues to snow. Be careful on that ice!

Just so you know: the latest report from the NWS office in Dickinson is — snow! Granted, there were only a few flakes (a very few) but we take what we can get. Safe travels, and enjoy your return to a more photogenic winter.

I was thinking of you this morning – looking at my frozen roses wondering if they’ll bounce back! Thank you for sharing the Dickinson report and your kind thoughts over my travels. Stay safe today!

We had our Winter over the past four days. There were a few freezing night’s before but this is our Winter, back normal Texas weather. I’m not really complaining when Imook at the weather is like around the country. 🙂

I agree wholeheartedly with you! If this is the only upset, what a blessing compared to six long months of winter. Your area definitely received more wintery weather than us here, but it’s still enough to keep us grounded another day❄️🥶.

Here in southern NJ we also experienced the same storm. It started as beautiful snow and my grandchildren were able to have a good time sledding with friends. The sleet was next, and then the freezing rain. Although we cleared the snow, the ice built up to about two – three inches on the walk and drive. Only a square steel shovel could remove it. Our normal snow shovel just bounced on top. I hope you have power and the sun is shining. We are ice-bound, but it is brilliant and beautiful.

Wow! Two-three inches of ice is incredible. The snow can be so much fun but the ice is treacherous. We were blessed to maintain power🙏🏻. You’re so right about the beauty of ice up north… especially when the sun shines after the layers of winter have landed…stunning!

Texas does get plenty cold. I drove through Denton and couldn’t even stop because of the black ice. And I had a house I wanted to check out!

We’re about 3 1/2hrs south of Denton, but know people in Frisco and they annually receive a shocking cold spell. That drive sounds scary! Guess you kept on driving right out of the state!!

I did, much to my dismay. I had high hopes for that house. Even the realtor told us not to stop.

Experiencing temps below freezing and ice conditions in Texas is quite different than places that are used to and prepared for those conditions. Have a great week. 😊

So true. When I first met my TX son-in-law, somehow we were talking about shovels being available at gas stations all winter. He asked why we would need to dig in the dirt in the winter!😂 Being from Central Texas, he had no concept of a snow shovel.
Since you have mentioned being back-and-forth here a few times, you have already experienced what I’m just beginning to appreciate – the beautiful contrasts.
Thank you and I wish you a great week as well!
