Texas Invention: Dr Pepper

Of all the museums I’ve walked through over the years, the Dr. Pepper Museum required the least amount of time to visit. The museum is one of the smaller adventures I’ve had in the otherwise massive state, where everything tends to be LARGE.

That said, the Waco, Texas Dr. Pepper Museum has hosted nearly three million visitors since it opened in 1991. The building has undergone three construction phases since then (completed in 1997) and is currently much bigger than its original structure. It also offers educational programs and field trips for the local community.

You know how some smells bring you inexplicable happiness while others make you feel bad and sometimes, you don’t even know why? A young pharmacist in the 1880’s enjoyed the smell of the drug store where he worked so much, he began experimenting with fruit syrups in an effort to create a drink that smelled like the store.

The young pharmacist was Charles Alderton, who worked for Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store. Once Alderton perfected his new drink in 1885, the owner, Mr. Morrison allowed him to sell it at the drug store counter. The rest is history!

Fun Facts about Dr. Pepper:

  • Dr. Pepper is the oldest of the major brand soft drinks in America and was created back in 1885.
  • Although I have used punctuation after Dr. in this post, you’ll notice that Dr Pepper is without punctuation – the decision to drop the period occurred back in the 1950’s. (From here forward, I’ll delete it.) Notice the first image I posted at the top? It contains the period!
  • The company that manufactures and sells the insanely popular Keurig coffee maker is actually Keurig Dr Pepper. In addition to the coffee, the coffee makers and Dr Pepper soda, the company owns 120 other brands including SwissMiss, Krispy Kreme, Newman’s Own Organics and Cinnabon, just to name a few!

In summary, if you ever visit the Dr Pepper Museum in Waco, Texas, they offer a few other fun activities, including Make-A-Soda, where you and your guests can choose Dr Pepper, Diet Dr Pepper, or Big Red, and add flavors to β€œcreate your own” soda version. They also have Taste-A-Soda that is a Dr Pepper blind taste test. The museum has fun offerings that I’m sure bring back local parents and school classes more than once.

Thank you for joining me on this Texas Tuesday tour!

Very cool! I never realized that Dr. Pepper was so rooted in TX. That explains why when Dr. Pepper sponsored Laraine Newman’s Canned Film Festival in 1986 they had her show set in a Texas town!

Your comment led me to look this up-I’m unfamiliar with Newman so I learned something new! Thanks for your comment!

Very interesting! I had no idea Keurig also owns & distributes Dr. Pepper. We’re visiting family in Switzerland right now. Back in 1981-2 when we first met our Swiss family by hosting a 17-yr-old AFS student, we discovered that Swiss kids hated Dr. Pepper taste because it is just like the taste of a medicine they endured as children when they were sick πŸ€’

Swiss Miss is one of the few hot chocolates that doesn’t include soy, for those of us allergic to soy. πŸ™‚

I wasn’t aware that most include soy. This was good to learn!

Most chocolate includes soy lecithin, a soy byproduct. Swiss Miss and Enjoy Life chocolate are both soy free.

Great post! In that first picture it also says that Dr Pepper is “free from caffeine.” How interesting that caffeine was added to the formula later.

I’m happy you enjoyed the post! I agree, there were surprising things we learned throughout the tour, like the caffeine being added later on.

Until I gave up soda drinks in 2009, I was a hardcore Pepper! I still love the flavor of Dr. Pepper but I can’t handle the caffeine or the carbonation. Getting old sucks. I’d love to visit there anyway. The Coca-Cola museum in Atlanta is a lot of fun too. We went when my sons were in 5th & 6th grade and they had a ball – especially with mixing their own versions of drinks….

The Coca-Cola museum does sound fun. Especially for that age, your sons must have loved making their own sodas!
I’m not much of a soda drinker but I know people trying to switch out for water and it’s not going well!πŸ˜„ As a former Pepper, I hope you can visit the museum one day!

wild, I would never expect it to be such a draw❣️. My dad worked for Coca Cola in the day. I’m shocked either are still around with with the amount of sugar or fake sure that are in them.

Despite all the awareness and steps forward in taking charge of personal health, soda continues to be a profitable product. It sells like wildfire at arenas and stadiums, not to mention personal consumption via the grocery stores. What is a special, occasional treat for some is a daily staple for others.

Interesting. I’m not surprised there’s a Dr Pepper museum because people in Texas and Oklahoma love that stuff. I have never liked the flavor of Dr Pepper, but my hubby does. However, he limits his intake to maybe once a month or so because we stopped drinking sodas a number of years ago.

Very good that neither of you drink soda. I’m not a pop drinker but my husband is. Maybe he will eventually become like your husband and limit to once a month🀞🏻.

Yes, I think the inventor was unique in even thinking about creating a drink based upon a smell. Thanks for stopping in to read and comment!

I was raised on the good Dr. I suspect that my mother installed a nipple on the bottle at the appropriate times of 10-2-4. I craved the sweet delightful beverage more than cold milk with a spoonful of Bosco. Whenever I eat at Whataburger, it’s always the same, a number 1 meal, no onions, and a Dr Pepper. My wife Momo recently went through a total knee replacement. Her surgeon, a youngish fellow is Dr. Craig Pepper…Dr. Pepper. He’s heard all the jokes so I kept my mouth shut, but he knew I wanted to ask him what time her surgery would be. Either 10, 2, or 4. It was at 10 am.

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚Your comments made me laugh out loud. You can’t plan that walk up to the Dr. Pepper surgeon!
Until we toured the museum, I had no idea what a big deal Dr Pepper is in Texas. I should add – Whataburger as well!
Thanks for the smiles this morning and for reading. Have a great weekend!
